Whistler Solar Days 2010
The BC Solar Days in Whistler were a hit with the kids and parents alike, from Solar race car races by the AWARE kids Nature club, an industry showcase and public tour of the meadow park solar thermal install the events despite the overcast day, drew a great crowd.
"I think it went really well," said Sara Jennings, from the Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE). "The tours of the pool, and then the WHA house were very interesting and even without the sun the electric cars were a big hit. Since we couldn't give them away to kids who took part in a race, we had a draw about every 15 minutes and used this to entice kids over to our table to learn more about solar power and renewable energy."
There was a renewable energy puzzle that sparked a lot of discussion as dod topicson things things like nuclear power, what natural gas is, and how other energy technologies work. "It was really interesting to see kids explore these topics," said Sara.
Whistler wanted to participate in Solar Days because of their involvement as a Solar Community but also because the regional municipality is committed to helping their citizens learn more about the environmental benefits and financial savings that can be achieved by equipting their homes and other buildings with simple, proven technologies to harness renewable energy. According to Guy Patterson, Housing Planner with the Resort Municipality of Whistler, this initiative is consistent with the community's broader vision of becoming the premier mountain resort community as they move toward sustainability.
