Whistler

SolarBC is proud to include the thriving Regional Municipality of Whistler
as our seventh Solar Community.

Whistler

This stunning region’s international profile, tourist traffic and vacation homeowner population expand to well beyond the local population of 10,000. A significant focus on sustainability in the planning and delivery of the 2010 Winter Games will also create a unique and powerful ability to expand the credibility, applicability and effectiveness of solar technology in this snowy, mountainous environment. As such, Whistler is uniquely positioned to expand the reach of the communication, training and capacity-building tools of SolarBC across BC Communities, and throughout the building industry.

For five years Whistler, in collaboration with the local building industry, has developed and refined a local green building rating system known as Whistler Green. This program provides important solar initiatives as they emphasize appropriate planning, design, siting, orientation, exposure and landscaping to allow for the integration of solar technologies in all new detached and multi-unit residential dwellings. Among other initiatives the city has already developed is the installation of solar parking meters throughout Whistler Village, a solar powered self-compacting waste disposal bin and development and integration of Solar Access Protection Guidelines for Whistler Village.

The regions’ hands on approach to being a green community is no better expressed in the example of their Mayor, Ken Melamed, who has recently installed a solar hot water system on his private residence. Read More
