Richmond

Preservation is Key to This Green Community

Richmond

The City of Richmond is a culturally diverse and geographically unique community centrally located on Canada's West Coast, 20 minutes away from downtown Vancouver. It is known throughout the Vancouver region for its quality Parks & Recreation facilities, and Culture & Heritage facilities. Richmond has over 90 parks that total approximately 1400 acres in area and an additional 200 acres in a recreational trail system plus a wide variety of recreational amenities. The community places a priority on protecting farmland, preserving its heritage and protecting the natural environment, just a few of the reasons it was chosen as a solar community.

Richmond is developing a comprehensive Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP) to be completed by the end of 2010. The CEEP scope of work includes an examination of solar potential in the community. Also, new local government powers will be investigated to see how appropriate they are for encouraging solar installations (e.g. Development Permit Guidelines, Local Improvement Charges).

A solar hot water system was recently installed on Samuel Brighouse Elementary School in Richmond, with plans to install a SHW system on the Steveston Community Centre in 2010. Richmond will also investigate the potential to replicate this project at the Minoru/Centennial Aquatic Centre and the South Arm community outdoor pool.
