Nanaimo
Tackling Climate Change Head On
The Regional District of Nanaimo lies on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island and is well known for its beautiful scenery and mild, temperate climate.
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) partnered with the City of Nanaimo, District Municipality of Lantzville, City of Parksville, and Town of Qualicum Beach to make the urban and rural areas of south-central Vancouver Island a Solar Community. The various local governments will work together to provide consistency in promotion, planning, installation, inspection, and approval of SHW systems.
The RDN and member municipalities will target 20 residential solar hot water systems in the region by April 2011. As work proceeds on the Regional Community Energy and Emissions Plan, each jurisdiction will set its own target for solar hot water systems, relating the targets to emission reductions.
The RDN recently installed a SHW system on the Transit Administration facility and the City of Nanaimo installed a system on the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. The regional district also intends to install a second solar hot water system at Ravensong Pool in the summer of 2010. The RDN and member municipalities will monitor energy use at these facilities, and present lessons learned as well as projected energy savings to facility managers and other local energy managers.
