Kelowna
Leading By Example
Known as a sunshine city, Kelowna is a perfect fit as a SolarBC Community. This scenic city in the heart of the Okanagan’s emerald lakes and lush orchards, receives more than 2000 hours of sunshine a year. They also have a history of sustainable development and energy management and were awarded Solar Community of the Year, from SolarBC, in 2008.
The City has embarked on several solar projects in recent years including solar-powered lights at a variety of community locations, solar-powered parking kiosks and solar-powered pedestrian signals.
A Solar Steering Committee has been implemented as part of the SolarBC Community initiative and led the way on installing a solar hot water system at the Enterprise Fire Hall. This project is one of the many ways Kelowna is hoping to educate the community and businesses on the feasibility of this alternative heating source.
Kelowna is planning to reduce their overall energy in municipal buildings by 20 per cent in 2010. In May 2010 they participated in the cross-province BC Solar Days events.
