Maintaining a Green Living

Invermere is located in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia. Resting on the North shore of Lake Windermere, which is a widening near the headwaters of the mighty Columbia River.

Invermere and the Columbia Valley not only benefit from having amazing scenery but they also share a healthy environment, which creates an undeniable responsibility to maintain and enhance what is already there. As a solar community, the district plans to install SHW on a washroom building to reduce electricity use. Council has dedicated two staff members to move the solar initiative forward and allocated funding to facilitate a solar feasibility analysis for municipal buildings. Staff members will be given opportunities to attend training sessions on solar hto water.

The District is amending its Official Community Plan to include 10 homes with solar hot water in 2010 and 10 per cent of homes by 2020. The District is also considering rebate programs for residences, commercial buildings and institutional buildings to encourage SHW installations. A proposed bylaw will require installation of SHW in all new construction starting in 2011.
