Grand Forks
Shining Example
The City of Grand Forks lies in the "Sunshine Valley" located in the southern interior of British Columbia and receives over 2000 hours of sunshine per year, making it well positioned as a solar community.
The City's first solar activity began in 1998 when improvements went into the airport and the newly installed beacons are solar. They have since had their swimming pool heated with solar. During the Solar Energy Forum held last year, 250 community members came out to show their support and with the help of the Grand Forks Economic Development Task Force Solar Team, solar and geothermal components are being planned for the downtown core.
The City has adopted targets of solar hot water on six residential units by 2011, and 5% (75 residential units) by 2020. A request of quotations has been issued for a solar hot water system on the shower and washroom building at the municipal campground. The feasibility of installing solar hot water systems on the Heritage Court House/Art Gallery, the Public Works Building and at least one school is under investigation. The City plans to sign-up for the BC Solar Ready Guidelines as soon as they are issued and is investigating providing municipal rebates to homeowners who install solar hot water.
