Fort St. John

Leading the Change

Fort St. John

The City of Fort St. John, located in the heart of majestic Peace River country, is the largest regional service center in northeastern BC. The city is a signatory of the BC Climate Change Charter, and is working on a community program, Be the Change. The city is confident that by increasing awareness they can motivate Fort St John residents to change their behaviours in order to increase sustainability, energy efficiency, and  conservation.

The city has installed a solar hot water system and a demo photovoltaic system on City Hall. Solar hot air heating has been installed in the Public Works Shop.  In addition, the city uses solar power for trash compactors, bus stop lighting, some pedestrian signals, and wireless technology to collect data from water meters and sewage lagoons

The City of Fort St. John has led the way in making regulatory changes to encourage the use of solar technologies.  The city signed onto the provincial Solar Hot Water Ready Regulation and offers rebates of $500 for building a solar ready house and $3,000 for installing a solar hot water system on a house.  The city is in the process of amending its Official Community Plan (OCP) to encourage the use of renewable energy including solar.

Fort St. John has provided training and raised awareness of solar and renewable energy technologies.  In September 2010, the city partnered with SolarBC to host a solar workshop for building and plumbing inspectors.  More recently, the city hosted a regional workshop on Renewable Energy requirements with the Pembina Institute, Peace River Regional District and local communities.
