Dawson Creek
Keeping One Step Ahead Of Their Carbon Footprint
In the heart of the Peace Region is the vibrant and growing community of Dawson Creek. This green city is known for its reliance on natural gas and for being a leader, promoter and implementer of solar hot water in British Columbia. Along with its excellent solar potential of 1100 solar hours per year, the city’s ingenuity, creativity and self-direction made it one of the first communities to be chosen as a SolarBC Solar Community.
Dawson Creek created a partnership with nearby West Moberly First Nation, as part of their role with SolarBC and shared their knowledge and expertise with the First Nation's community.
Dawson Creek has installed solar hot water systems on all municipal buildings. The city has installed a photovolatic (PV) system on City Hall and experimented wtih PV for street lights and bus stops. They have also updated their Official Community Plan to provide support for renewable energy such as solar and wind, and participated in a project to develop a Renewable Energy Requirement for BC.
