Campbell River
Committed to Energizing Solar
The City of Campbell River, a scenic oceanfront city on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, has a head-start as a Solar Community having already installed four solar powered cross-walks with eight more to be added this year. The City also recently installed two solar radar recorders that count vehicle volume, speed, and length. As well, the City has had solar assessments of City Hall, Sportsplex, Fire Station #1, Centennial Outdoor Pool, and the RCMP building to examine the potential for solar hot water.
The City of Campbell River’s solar efforts will include promoting SHW and SolarBC incentives to homeowners and developers through workshops, and displays at community events; installing SHW on up to five municipal buildings; increasing knowledge of SHW through Lunch ‘n Learn sessions for City staff; providing training for inspectors; and supporting solar hot water installer training at North Island College.
Being a Solar Community will support the City of Campbell River's Green City Strategy, and its BC Climate Action Charter commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2012. The City is currently beginning a comprehensive Official Community Plan review to include an integrated community sustainability plan and a community energy and emissions plan. Campbell River is also a member of the Pembina Institute's Municipal Green Building Leaders Project, which is reviewing the potential for renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in new and existing buildings.
