SHW SHOWERS A UNIQUE ADDITION TO COX BAY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TOFINO B.C., November 6, 2009 — Surfers in Tofino will no longer be seen shivering on the beaches after a session in the winery waters of the Pacific ocean. Thanks to the District, new solar hot water showers have been installed in the outdoor shower facility at Cox Bay.
"It’s a great way to showcase solar hot water in the municipality to tourists and locals," says Braden Smith, Director of Development with the District. "And surfers can rinse off their wetsuits after a cold surf." The second shower at the washroom/change-room and outdoor shower facility will supply hot water from the 2 collector Enerworks system and will cost $.50 for 45 seconds. The existing cold showers will remain free while the funds from the new shw showers will go towards the ongoing maintenance of the facility. The new showers will be a highly visible, intensively used site with signs showing how SHW works.
"There were quite a few people watching us install it," says Scott Fleenor, of TerraTek, who installed the system. "In their words, they were stoked."
The install is one of many solar projects on the go, for the District. As an official Solar Community, Tofino endeavours to lead the way by demonstrating how small local governments can achieve big results and their high profile will help when spread the word about solar hot water to other small communities in B.C.
