City of Grand Forks
Grand Forks Solar Days:
The city will be hosting a family fun day of solar events during the 2010 BC Solar Days.
Grand Forks is the “Sunshine Valley” with over 2000 hours of sunshine per year. The City's first solar activity began in 1998 when improvements went into the airport and the newly installed beacons are solar. They have since had their swimming pool heated with solar. During the Solar Energy Forum held last year, 250 community members came out to show their support and with the help of the Grand Forks Economic Development Task Force Solar Team, solar and geothermal components are being planned for the downtown core. Grand Forks has also applied to become an official solar community.
"We want to take this wonderful resource through the rest of the community and reduce our carbon footprint on the earth," says City Councillor Joy Davies.
- Date: Friday, May 28th
- Time: 11am - 6pm
- Location: Seniors Center (in the park) and Selkirk College (parking lot).
- Planned activities: Solar car races put on by elementary school students and the Cub Scouts, as well as project and art competitions, solar PV and solar thermal energy displays, hot dogs and entertainment - including a "One Seed" presentation by Rosemary Phillips.
Bring your family down and join in the solar celebration! There will be lots of fun SolarBC giveaways as well - from Solar Days t-shirts, to magnets and green pens with sunflower seeds you can plant at home.
Keep an eye on the city's event calendar for more information or contact Joy Davies at jdavies@grandforks.ca
About Grand Forks
At first glance our beautiful tree-lined streets and abundance of well-maintained heritage homes will enchant you. But don't stop there, spend some time exploring! Grand Forks has everything one could ask for in four-season recreation -fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, golfing, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, camping, and all types of water sports on our many lakes and rivers.
The Boundary area is also a haven for the history buff with many turn of the century mine sites, the old Phoenix town site, and many abandoned rail grades to explore.
In town, visit the Art Gallery, browse downtown, stop in for a dip at our indoor Aquatic and Fitness Centre, enjoy a game of tennis or sunbathe at one of the many beaches along the river. And when it is time for lunch, drop in to one of our many restaurants that offer delicious, authentic Russian borscht and a big thick slice of homemade bread.
