The Solar Hot Water workshop in Whistler is right around the corner, so if you want to follow in Mayor Ken Melamed’s footsteps by installing a solar hot water system in your home, this is the time to find out how.

"Our aim is to illuminate the opportunities for solar hot water in our community," says Guy Patterson, planner for the Resort Municipality of Whistler. Areas of interest being addressed during the May 28 workshop, held at the Westin Hotel, will include the ins and outs of installing systems and awareness of Whistler as a Solar Community.

Whistler became a Solar Community earlier this year, during the 2009 Solar Summit, held in Vancouver. The Region was recognized for their leadership and innovation in the deployment of solar hot water and other solar technologies in their community. They received the honour for their outstanding commitment to being a green city and employing many solar initiatives to date – from solar parking to a solar powered self-compacting waste disposal bin. They are also currently developing Solar Access Protection Guidelines for Whistler Village.

Speakers at the workshop will be Nitya Harris, Executive Director of SolarBC and Morgan McDonald, from Offsetters.ca. Morgan has over ten years of experience in the private and not-for-profit sectors designing and describing sustainable energy systems.

"We hope to debunk the myths and begin our journey as a Solar Community with this workshop," says Patterson.
