Tofino Solar Days 2010

Cox Bay Beach Day

Campbell RiverTofino locals attended a community beach day at Cox Bay Beach on May 29 as part of the BC Solar Days festivities. There was a ribbon cutting ceremony on the solar hot water showers at the beach, followed by a BBQ and solar race car races, as well as lots of fun giveaways.

"We had a lot of fun," said Aaron Rodgers, posing with his wife Louise in their creative homemade costumes. "There was a good crowd despite the cloudy weather."

New solar hot water showers were installed in the outdoor shower facility at Cox Bay, in November 2009. "It’s a great way to showcase solar hot water in the municipality to tourists and locals," said Braden Smith, Director of Development with the District. "And surfers can rinse off their wetsuits after a cold surf."

The second shower at the washroom/change-room and outdoor shower facility will supply hot water from the two collector Enerworks system and will cost $.50 for 45 seconds.

The existing cold showers will remain free while the funds from the new solar hot water showers will go towards the ongoing maintenance of the facility. The new showers are highly visible with signs showing how SHW works.
