From solar panels on community buildings to street lights (yes, street lights!) Dawson Creek has been a step ahead when it comes to solar hot water.

“The area has over 1100 solar hours per year, making it one of the best sites in Canada for solar potential,” says Emanuel Machado, Director of Corporate Planning and Sustainable Community Development. He says the Community's reliance on natural gas, for heating space and water heating, and the associated emissions (GHGs), make solar a very viable option. Not to mention the potential there is to reduce energy costs and emissions.

Over the past five years, Dawson Creek has accumulated a significant amount of knowledge and expertise with regard to solar photovoltaics (electric solar heat) and solar hot water systems. As nearby West Moberly is fairly new to solar systems, the City plans to provide training opportunities for the First Nations community in solar hot water installation, maintenance and inspection. The City will also share its experience in solar hot water policy and installation. Education is a priorty to Dawson Creek and their Northern Lights College has committed to an Excellence Centre in Renewable Energy, where existing trades, such as plumber and electricians, can get certified in Solar Hot Water installations, PV installations and Wind Turbine maintenance.

Another priority is making things easier for homeowners. Dawson Creek intends to design and launch a program that will allow homeowners to finance energy efficiency and renewable energy improvements including solar hot water to their homes with local improvement charges. As well, they are exploring the installation of solar hot water systems on commercial buildings, and in conjunction with Pembina, and UVIC, they are identifying policy tools and options for a solar readiness by-law.

“Our involvement in Solar BC is part of commitment to promote solar in BC and become a Solar City,” says Machado. “We also expect to continue learning from our participation and sharing the lessons learned fro our experience.”

Dawson Creek’s continuing evolution as a Solar Community, along with their partnership initiatives with the West Moberly First Nations will be a key part of their role alongside SolarBC.
